Chapter 38 Is She the One You’re Marrying?
Mr. Stanley’s words left Lexie with no way to argue.
The entire family knew that the person Alan was going to marry at first was Edith, but the one who was sent into the Howard family on the wedding night was her, a mute.
Not waiting for Lexie to answer.
“Yes,” Diana immediately spoke, “I heard that someone was intimidating her own sister, saying that our family is a tiger and wolf’s nest, and that Alan looks ugly and has a bad character, and then make a generous appearance to marry into our family for her sister …”
Lexie’s face changed.
[I didn’t say those words.]
“You are still arguing,” Diana wanted to say something else, but was interrupted by Mr. Stanley.
“Alright, there’s no need to say more about what’s already true,” Mr. Stanley looked at Lexie, his gaze slightly sunken like Alan’s, causing Lexie to shudder.
“Miss Mitchell, since it was a misunderstanding in the first place, why don’t we settle it properly? You and Alan are indeed inappropriate to be together.”
Lexie squeezed her fingers tightly and looked at Mr. Stanley in surprise.
Mr. Stanley said in a deep voice, “Not many people knew about this marriage, it’s good for both families to stop the damage in time. We will give you some compensation, and the marriage will be called off.”
Lexie looked at the people present, some gloating and some standing by.
She dreamed of leaving the Howard family, leaving Alan, but if she just left, would Peter let her go? Would Alan let her go? The result was imaginable.
She shook her head against the overwhelming pressure.
Mr. Stanley’s face sank, “You don’t want to? Even the proper young lady of the Mitchell family is not good enough for our family, not to mention that you are an illegitimate daughter, for the Howard family …”
The words ‘illegitimate daughter’ fell on Lexie’s ears with the sting of a needle.
Her nails almost pinched into her palm.
“Grandpa,” a cold voice came through the door, breaking the frozen air of the room.
Lexie jerked her head up, and saw Alan striding across the threshold, in a tailored black suit, his tall figure wrapped in a chill.
“Alan, you are here,” Mr. Stanley looked faint, “just in time to get the divorce out of the way in front of you.”
“Grandpa,” Alan glanced at Lexie, “Lexie is my legitimate wife, marriage is not a child’s play, and I haven’t considered divorce.”
“Nonsense,” Mr. Stanley’s face sank and his tone heaved, “You were marrying the Mitchell family’s second young lady, and they sent a …”
“Grandpa!”
Before the word ‘mute’ could be fully uttered, it was interrupted by Alan’s voice, “I never said that it was the second young lady of the Mitchell family that I was going to marry.”
At the drop of a word, the entire room was silent.
Lexie was also stunned and looked at Alan in amazement.
“I’m marrying the Mitchell family’s daughter, never naming Edith,” Alan’s words confirmed that what they had just heard was correct.
Mr. Stanley looked puzzled, “Are you saying that it was Lexie that you wanted to marry in the first place?”
Alan didn’t say anything, and this tacit attitude made Diana crazy.
“Alan, you can’t be childish, how could you possibly be willing to marry a mute …”
“Aunt, you probably don’t know me very well.”Content property of NôvelDra/ma.Org.
Alan glanced at Diana, the chill in his gaze causing Diana to shut her mouth.
He hadn’t planned to bring Lexie here at all, and today grandpa suddenly called Lexie here in advance, so he knew whose idea it was.
The atmosphere froze for a moment.
Alan’s temper was on par with Mr. Stanley’s, the butler saw this and eased situation, “The dinner is ready, why don’t we eat first?”
Mr. Stanley frowned, stood up on his crutches, and said lightly, “Let’s eat.”
Lexie sighed in relief.
While eating, Lexie sat next to Alan, dressed plainly but with dignity and generosity.
Seeing that Alan didn’t eat much, Lexie peeled the shrimp for him, leaving only a shrimp tail, which was neatly placed on his plate.
This scene fell in Mr. Stanley’s eyes.
Lexie had the rare atmosphere of a grand dame, if not a mute, it was not a bad idea to marry Alan.
After eating, Alan was called to the study by Mr. Stanley, and Lexie waited in the living room.
The maid served tea, and Diana talked to Tina.
“It’s been a while since I’ve seen you, Tina, and I heard that this time you are coming back with the intention of getting engaged?”
“Yes.” Tina smiled.
“I heard that the other party is the eldest son of the Walsh family, young and talented, you are so lucky.”
“Actually, I don’t want to get married so early,” Tina seemed to avoid the engagement, and glancing at Lexie at the corner of her eyes, she suddenly turned her words, “Hey, how come you and my brother didn’t have a wedding?”
Lexie was drinking tea, she raised his head when she heard that, not knowing what to say.
Diana didn’t have a good mood and said, “Having a wedding is a joke for the Howard family? We can’t afford that.”
“That’s right.”
Tina looked at Lexie, “Edith said that if I had told her earlier what kind of person my cousin was, maybe it would have been her who married my cousin, not you.”
Lexie was slightly stunned, not knowing what Tina meant by saying this.
“You peeled shrimp for my cousin, but my cousin didn’t even eat it, what is the point? What I despise most is a woman who loves vanity and has no self-respect.”
Tina did not speak in a loud voice, but that arrogant attitude was like stepping on people underfoot.
Lexie’s look grew awkward.
As they were talking, Tina’s cell phone rang, and Lexie was close enough to see the word ‘Edith’ on the caller ID, which was extraordinarily dazzling.
“Excuse me, I’ll take a call, Mrs. Stewart.”
Tina took her phone and went out, and glanced at Lexie with contempt as she was leaving, very dismissive.
Diana slowly sipped tea, this trip was really not in vain, even if Lexie’s marriage temporarily could not be withdrawn, but the cold attitude of the Howard family on her was enough for her to suffer.
She just didn’t believe it, in the long run, this mute would still be able to tough it out.
Alan was called into the study by Mr. Stanley.
Mr. Stanley said bluntly, “What exactly do you think of this marriage?”
Alan’s face was cold, “I won’t divorce Lexie for now.”
“Why? I can see that you don’t like her, and if she were able-bodied, it is okay, she really doesn’t deserve you.”
“Grandpa, it doesn’t matter who I marry, as long as it’s the Mitchell family’s daughter.”
Mr. Stanley was stunned and looked at Alan in surprise, only gradually coming back to his senses after a long time, “Alan, you’re not still holding a grudge over what happened back then, are you?”
Mentioning that year, coldness floated between Alan’s brows, his face sunken.
Mr. Stanley frowned, “I told you, that fire was an accident back then.”
“It wasn’t an accident,” Alan’s gaze was sure and cold, “The mountain fire was set by Peter to kill a person.”
