“He’s quite meticulous,” Cahir said with a laugh, starting up his car. He had a carefree expression on his face, not like someone who just heard his best friend betrayed him and his pack would soon be under siege from more traitors.

“You’re taking this rather well,” I commented.

“It’s a bit funny. ver thought Aristo would betray me so I’m pleasantly surprised.” He chuckled. “And Alpha Blood which will go to shit without me yet they want to go against me,” he snorted. “It’s a funny scenario.” No, it wasn’t but I didn’t say anything.

I fell asleep sometime during the long ride back to the pack and woke up once to drink water, my throat parched and aching.

When we got to the Alpha Castle, Cahir was bundling me into his arms when I woke up. “Sleep. I’ve got you.” I snuggled up into his chest and went back to sleep. I didn’t wake up till late afternoon the next day and it was Cahir that woke me up,

“We have to find a time to take you to the priestess,” he mumbled, “You kept muttering in your sleep and your temperature is high again.” He touched my forehead and I shivered. His touch ignited something inside me but I said nothing.

“We can go when this is over,” I mumbled, taking a gulp of orange juice. “I’m not going anywhere without you and you can’t leave the situation as it is.”

“I can take you –”

“No,” I cut him off.

Cahir may not care what happened to Alpha Blood in his absence but the last thing I wanted was for him to take me to the temple and come back to see a bastard in his seat and his pack turned on its head. He may hate this land and the people here but there were too many innocent people who would suffer if this pack fell.

“Why are you so stubborn?” He grumbled.

“It’s because I’m hanging out with you these days.” I snickered. “Don’t worry about me, love. Focus on the task at hand.” He wore a frown on his face.

“Can you say that again?” He asked, his frown deepening.

“What? That you should focus on the task at hand?” I asked, biting into my third sandwich. I used to love sandwiches, especially the special ones the chef here made me but these days, since I got pregnant, I no longer fancied them. Today, I ate them with a ravenous hunger that I didn’t understand.

“No, the words you said yesterday.” I wracked my brain for what significant thing I may have said the previous day but when he turned his face away, my eyes lit up as did my cheeks.

“O – oh that.” I chuckled, my face hot. “I – I love you.” A pure, almost childlike smile bloomed on his face

“That I can’t explain how much joy those words bring me.” He sighed. “I love you too, Sia.” His eyes blazed as he said those words. “Now, let’s be happy together.”

The happiness he spoke of was still a long way away.

I went back to sleep after eating, feeling fatigued to my bones from the ordeal of the previous night. Nightmares plagued my sleep. In every dream I had, rather than my pup chasing me about, Aristo

held a gun to my head and threatened to blow my brains out if I did not comply with him. Then in some, he held the gun to Cahir’s head and in others, he held the gun to his head and cursed at me for not loving him.

‘I am so much better than him!‘ The Aristo plaguing my dream shouted. ‘I’m completely sane so why can’t you love me!? Love me!‘ Then he shot himself.

“Sia,” a saccharine sweet voice called me from my sleep. “Sihana, love. Open your eyes.” The voice coaxed

With great difficulty, I blinked open my eyes and then my heart hardened.

“I’m glad to see you’re fine.” My eyes bounced around the place as I took in my surroundings, scared that I had been abducted yet again but I was in the room I shared with Cahir, on our bed, so how did this bastard get in here?

“You.” I spat the words like a curse. “What are you –” He held a finger to my lips.

“I’ve come to check on you, love. Are you alright?” I bit his finger and his mouth opened as if to exclaim but he swallowed down. He held a hand over my mouth as I tried to shout. “Don’t be a bitch now.” His eyes blazed as I struggled to get him to let go of me. “Listen, I’m leaving now. I just came to make sure you made it back safely. Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon.” He took his hand off my mouth as the door opened.

“This is a sore sight.” Cahir entered the room with a smile on his face that made my skin prickle. Rather than speak a word, Aristo jumped out of the open window.

I scrambled out of bed to look down, knowing he would not have done that recklessly but hoping he would be splattered on the floor with mangled limbs but he wasn’t anywhere in sight.

“He’s gone!” I exclaimed when I didn’t see him.

“We used to joke that he was part feline,” Cahir said with a sigh. “He either jumped into the balcony beneath us, or he improved enough to jump out the window without -“As he spoke, I saw a figure moving in the balcony beneath us, and then I saw the beta jump down and break into a run, two other wolves following him.

“There are also traitors here,” I muttered with a shaky heart.

“There’s no way to know who is and isn’t a traitor here Cahir muttered.

“I’m scared,” I admitted out loud. My heart pounded hard after falling to my stomach and my gut clenched tight. “It’s not safe for us here.” I touched my stomach and Cahir’s eyes followed my movement.

“Do you want us to leave?” He would pack a bag and take me with him if I said yes. He didn’t care a shred about Alpha Blood anymore. They’d been his tether from bloodlust for a long time but now I was here and he didn’t need them anymore. The Alpha in him would struggle to let go of his pack and his power but for me, he was willing to do it.
