"If he had just been more like the other rich guys, just treating women like a pastime, then he wouldn't care if she left," Ben thought, bitterness creeping into his mind.
If Winnie didn't see Jamie as her sister, she wouldn't have gotten dragged into this mess today.
Jamie remained silent, sensing Ben's intentional jabs. As a lawyer and as someone who had once loved her deeply, he knew exactly what words would sting the most. She kept telling herself not to let his words get to her, to block them out, but they drilled into her like a spell.
"Why aren't you saying anything?" Ben grabbed her face, forcing her to look directly at him. "Don't play dumb now. You're plenty chatty when it comes to other men. Why is it that with me, you're suddenly speechless?"
The door behind them creaked open. Winnie stepped out, noticing how close the two were. She stopped in her tracks, hesitation in her voice, "Jack, Jamie...what are you two doing?"
They were standing so close. It seemed almost too intimate. Winnie quickly dismissed the thought, reminding herself that her sister and her fiancé would never betray her like that.
Jamie instinctively tried to pull back, but Ben held firm, keeping his grip on her. "You saw everything," he said to Winnie.
"Jack, let go of my sister. What...what's going on here?" Winnie's eyes darted between them, desperate for an explanation.
"She's out here getting involved with other men, putting you and the baby at risk. Does someone like that deserve to be called your sister?" Ben's cold words sliced through Jamie.
Winnie's doubts melted away,
relieved. If Jack was this harsh with Jamie, there was no way he was involved with her. "Come on, don't be mad," she urged gently. "We had no idea that guy was taken. If we'd known, we'd have sent him away. I was just hoping maybe he'd be a good match for Jamie. We're both the ones who got blindsided here."
Ben's expression turned colder still. Winnie had wanted to match Jamie with him? It seemed she had way too much faith in people.
To Winnie, his reaction only seemed

out forme, but this whole thing's over now. You and Jamie are the two people I'm closest to, and I want you both to get along. If you two argue, I wouldn't know who to side with."
Jamie stood a few feet away, hearing every word clearly. Winnie saw her as the person she trusted most, and yet, here she was caught up in this twisted situation with Ben...
"How about a kiss to make it all better? After that, we'll call it done. No more talking about it, promise," Winnie said, lifting herself on her toes to plant a kiss on his cheek.
Ben instinctively dodged, then quickly offered an excuse, "We're in public, and there are cameras."
Winnie looked at him, a bit puzzled.
"We're engaged. So what if there are cameras? We're together openly." Though a hint of disappointment crossed her face, she let it slide without pressing further.
