CHAPTER 44
'Miss Hewitt, it's me."
It was a low baritone, mellifluous voice, with a hint of casual laziness that disarmed its audience.
Kira rubbed her earlobe.
She didn't know a man's voice could be so seductive.NôvelDrama.Org © 2024.
'Mr Cane?"
"Ah, so you remember me. I'm glad." Liam chuckled.
"Of course I remember you. You retrieved my purse and hence saved my life. How can I forget you?"
Kira recalled the unknown caller ID. "Mr Cane, how did you get my number?
"You gave it to me. Yesterday."
"Did I?" Kira scratched her head. 'How come I don't remember?"
She muttered to herself, 'Did the blackout cause retrograde amnesia? Giana's right. I should stop binge drinking."
"Miss Hewitt, Liam continued in his smooth voice, I'm calling to invite you for dinner."
'Oh, that's very nice of you,' Kira said apologetically, "You saved me. I should be the one inviting you. But I'm really sorry, I can't make it today. I'm having dinner with my colleagues tonight." "Ah, I see."
The disappointment in his voice was obvious.
Kira felt bad.
The Good Samaritan was injured because of her.
She had been meaning to treat him to a thank-you dinner, but she got side-tracked last night.
'May I take a rain check?' she said.
The car had slowed down.
*Kira, Revency's office is just ahead,' Lexi said. 'But I can't park there. I'll drop you off here and park around the corner."
On the other end of the line, Liam arched an eyebrow as he caught the company's name.
"Sure. Kira undid her seatbelt and got out of the car. "Hello, Mr Cane? You still there?"
'Yes, I'm here."
Kira started jogging for the front entrance. 'I'm sorry. I have to go now, I'll call you soon.' 'Are you at Revency's office?' Liam asked.
"Yes, or a client visit,' Kira said. 'You've heard of the company?"
Liam smiled. 'Of course. Well, I should let you get back to work."
After a pause, he added meaningfully, 'I look forward to our next meeting."
"Um, sure, me too."
Kira thought his last sentence was a bit odd, but she just said goodbye politely and hung up.
At the president's office, of Revency.

Liam tossed his phone aside.
He leaned back in the leather chair, staring into space.
On his face was a gleeful smile, like a kid who just got a new toy.
Or a cat who just set its eyes on the canary.
Sitting on the sofa not far away was a man puffing away on a cigar.
His voice was raspy. So this is your idea? Get close to McCarthy's woman as a way to get to him?"
